About
A psychiatrist from the city, at home in the world
My path to medicine was not direct. I grew up in New York City, studied German in college and spent a year living in Munich, later living in Seattle and working at a hospital before ultimately doing a postbaccalaureate program and starting medical school. All of these experiences helped me grow my understanding of the world, particularly my interest in language and in how people communicate their experience.
I live and practice on an island in the Pacific Northwest, see patients remotely, and recently started writing publicly at thought.doctor on Substack.
I am a psychiatrist, writer, consultant, and coach. If you have found this website I hope you will take a moment to learn more about me and my work.
How I Think
Mind and body have never been separate categories for me
I am influenced as much by behavioral economics and evolutionary biology as by traditional psychiatry. The DSM is a billing tool as much as a clinical one, and while labels can be useful for accessing care and medication, they are not who you are. I am still here to help you find the right diagnosis and the right medication if that is what you need, but my ideal patient wants to go deeper.
If you are not sure which path is right for you, I am happy to help you figure it out.
Ways to Work Together
-
Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine
I run a psychiatry private practice, mostly remotely. I offer direct pay services outside of insurance to keep the doctor patient relationship about what you need, and not what a third party reviewer wants. I love complexity, I am not in a hurry, and I take the time to individualize treatment to your needs.
-
Personal and Business Coaching
Coaching for people asking questions about how they want to work and live. A thought partner who has spent years figuring out how to build a career and life that actually fit together. I have worked with artists, engineers, teachers, physicians, and many other working professionals.
-
Consulting, Speaking and Advising
A clinician, tech nerd, and deep thinker all rolled into one. I see patients, stay current with the research, and genuinely engage with the health tech space.

A note on how I work
I am a solo practice with no staff and no intermediaries, which means that when we are in session together you have my complete attention. My days are not a classic 9-5 schedule. I see patients in private practice and in residential treatment settings where the day can shift quickly. In addition to my clinical work, I travel, write, and protect time for the rest of my life.
